I went back to the site and found the standard trial version, which looked different and acted slower but eventually that scan showed the same files, so I paid the $50US (after locating a 10% discount code online) and 6 hours later I have all of those files transferred to another stable drive.

I went to pay for a license and my heart skipped a beat though, when I realized that the default trial version was for their "Professional" version which was over $1,000 US!. I downloaded the trial version and got it to scan the drive and a few hours later it had everything on screen for that drive which I thought I'd lost. I've probably spent WAY too much time on this trying to resurrect the data on these drive the past week or so, but after a LOT of trial and error experimenting with gimped free versions of the programs you'd suggested I finally found one that looked promising and identified the data on one of my dead iTunes drives (with all of my lost music/movies). Whichever I end up with I'll make the clone as you suggest and recover from that. So you personally suggest ReclaiMe? I'll check them all out but will give particular attention to that one. (and in case you're wondering, one of the dead drives included my media backup!. While I did rip my entire CD and DVD collection (and sold the physical media afterwards) in the age of streaming I can find most of what I had online pretty easily, but it was certainly nice to have it all on a drive as needed.

I'm not sure I want to pay the anticipated high price of a professional to restore the data on these drives. I don't see any real connection in the failures, but rather just dumb-luck coincidence. The remaining two died about a month apart. One WD drive died awhile back but I kept it in case I could somehow restore it. They didn't all corrupt at the same time.
It was a total of four disks actually, but one of them with a batch of movies appears to work when I plug it directly in to my Samsung TV but doesn't show in Windows. Sorry for the long post about a simple issue - So what are the best free or paid solutions out there that I should consider? (I wish I were more tech savvy to follow suggestions to use PhotoRec or TestDisk). I'm happy to pay for a program as long as there's no limitations on data/devices or ongoing subscriptions involved, on the other hand something free that can get all that data back without holding me hostage somehow is even better. (for example, I saw great reviews about Stellar's program and was almost ready to buy it, only to see it decimated here on Reddit). Unfortunately, the internet (and even this page) seems to be all over the place with opinions on what's best. I'm just a regular user and not a tech guy so a good GUI would be best.

I'm hoping to find a reputable software that's intuitive and as thorough as possible. Even worse, the risk of a bait & switch or malware being attached somehow.
I tried a couple of free trial programs and it seems to me that the data is still there but they either weren't user friendly or wouldn't recover anything without a paid license. Each drive is 2TB and have my entire music/video library so I want to recover as much as possible. I haven't done this out of fear fear of completely deleting the files, so I don't even know if it would work to reinitialize. I feel/hear spinning but they won't show up in explorer and disk manager wants me to reinitialize them in order to access them. I have 3-4 external drives with different media backups that have failed on me. I realize that this is probably an old and tired subject, but the more I look in to the issue the more confused I am as to which Windows file recovery program to go with.
